I.                   COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is an action-oriented course designed to identify and seek solutions to some of the major health problems of our time, including such vital personal and community health issues as nutrition, physical fitness, emotional health, human sexuality and drug abuse.  Students are encouraged to become involved in assignments that emphasize their own development.   ALL ASSIGNMENTS AND COMMUNICATION WILL BE DELIVERED VIA THE INTERNET.

*YOU MUST BE SELF-MOTIVATED FOR SUCCESS IN THIS COURSE*

II.                TEXTBOOK:  Health, The basics, 8th edition by Rebecca Donatelle.

v  You can purchase your textbook online or in the bookstore.  The textbook for the online class has an access code you will need to register for the CourseCompass portion of the online class.

v  You will need the course name (HED 100) and the ticket #21695.

v  You can order online at www.cerritos.bkstr.com and pick it up the next day outside the book store at the ATM or you can have it shipped to you in 2-3 business working days.

v  If you purchase your book inside the store don't take the one on the shelf, it will be the wrong book.  Ask at the reference desk for the correct book for your section number.

v  If you have a used book, you must purchase a separate access code at the desk in the middle of the bookstore or online.  It is less expensive to purchase a new book (which includes the access code) than to buy a used book and a separate access code.  You can purchase an access code at the reference desk in the book store or at www.coursecompass.com.  The CourseCompass site does have a eBook included so it is not necessary to have a hard copy.

v  Purchase your textbook immediately and register in TalonNet and in CourseCompass.  Make sure you read the entire syllabus and post your introduction on the discussion board (see class assignments)

III.             Learning Outcome: Students will learn healthy behavioral changes to prevent diseases and increase longevity.

IV.             REGISTERING FOR TalonNet AND CourseCompass:

This class will be managed through TalonNet, the campus tool for online courses and CourseCompass, a service provided by our textbook publishing company.  All course information and documents (lectures, study guides, practice quizzes, etc.) will be found on CourseCompass which is accessed through TalonNet.  You will take tests, quizzes, and participate in class discussions through the CourseCompass service.

You MUST access the CourseCompass service through TalonNet.

First you will register for TalonNet by going to the college website at www.cerritos.edu and clicking on the TalonNet link or by going directly to http://talonnet.cerritos.edu/xsl-portal. To login enter your 7 digit student number, add a leading zero if you have a 6 digit number, and your date of birth (MMDDYY)

Once you register for TalonNet you will select the tab for your HED 100 class.  Once you have opened the site for this class you will find the link for CourseCompass.  It is important for Student accountability that you always access CourseCompass through TalonNet.

Next, click on the tab for CourseCompass.  You must have an access code to register in CourseCompass.  You will receive the code at the school bookstore when you purchase a new textbook.  If you purchase a used book, you must also buy an access code separately.  Access codes from the previous semester are no longer active (a former student’s code will not work).  Purchase your textbook immediately and register on CourseCompass.
