PERSONAL FITNESS

I.                     COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to fitness test students, assign an exercise program, and then retest to note progress.  Knowledge of the five components of fitness and basic exercise science will be used to develop programs.  This course will begin with the basic techniques of safe and effective exercise and individuals will progress at their own rate to achieve personal goals.  Benefits of aerobic training, weight training, and safety will be stressed.

 

II.                   GENERAL AIM:

A.     To achieve and/or improve upon level of cardiovascular fitness.

B.     To improve the body’s muscular system.

C.     To improve flexibility.

D.     To aid efforts to control body weight and improve body composition.

E.      To experience relief from stress of daily living.

F.      To obtain an appreciation of the importance of safe and effective exercise.

 

III.               LEARNING OUTCOME:

The students will demonstrate improvement in the 5 components of fitness by           comparison of pre and post fitness assessments

 

IV.                 STUDENTS RESPONSIBILITIES:

Class Participation: Attending class and being on time is extremely important.  To improve physical fitness requires regular participation in class activities.  Failure to attend class regularly may hinder ability to improve or maintain class intensity level and thus may lower the student’s grade.  Students must attend on a regular basis.

 

Lab Assignments, testing:  Students must complete all pre-, mid, and post-tests for the components of fitness.  Additionally, one written test will be required based on information covered in lab.  Additional assignments will be given through out the semester.

 

Equipment and Dress Requirements:  Athletic type clothing or dance apparel is required.  Proper footwear is required.  Removal of jewelry, a water bottle (not glass) and towel are recommended for class.

 

Plagiarism or any other form of academic dishonesty will result in no credit (0 points) on the assignment or examination without an opportunity for make-up.

V.                 GRADING FOR LAB:                                                   Total points = 300 pts

     

A.     Participation

Five points will be awarded for participation in                          150 pts

each class.  To earn points students must be on time, dress

appropriately, and participate to the best of their abilities. 

 

      Absences/                    0 = 150 pts      4 = 130            8 = 110

      unprepared for class = 1 = 145 5 = 125            9 = 105

                                          2 = 140            6 = 120            10 = 100

                                          3 = 135            7 = 115            11 = 95

 

Tardies/Leaving EarlyFour tardies or early outs will equal one

Absence/5 pt subtraction.  It is the student’s responsibility to

inform the instructor about lateness or reason for leaving early.

MakeupsSix makeups only will be allowed at Cerritos College

fitness and wellness labs, aerobics classes, or other fitness related classes with your instructors approval.  You must get the makeup instructor to sign a card with your name and the date to verify your makeup.  This must be presented to your instructor to receive credit. All make-ups must be completed before the last 2 weeks of the semester. Back-to-back classes will not receive make-up credit.

 

B.     Fitness/Performance Tests

Cardiovascular Fitness, Muscular Strength, Muscular                50 pts

Endurance, Flexibility, Body Composition (optional). 

A chart to record all test will be handed out to all students.

 

C.     Fitness/Performance Improvement

Credit will be given for improvement and/or maintenance                       25 pts

of high fitness/performance level.  Normative data charts

will be used to categorize performance.

 

D.     Lab Assignments

Various assignments will be given during lab.  These                  25 pts

assignments will relate to the topics being covered in lab. 

Each student will be required to complete these assignments. 

(i.e. calculating training zone, keeping exercise logs,

developing a goal and exercise plan for cardiovascular and

resistance training.)

 

E.      Written Test

The test will be based on lab assignments and any information    50 pts

discussed and covered in lab.

 

A = 300-270     B = 269-240     C  = 239-210     D = 209-180      F=179 and below
